As a Buddhist Why Christianity?

My name is Leo Cheng

I was born in Hong Kong in a traditional Chinese family while Hong Kong was a British colony.

In Hong Kong, money has become many people’s god and therefore many workers have 3 jobs, i.e. 8am to 5pm, evening and weekends.

I would claim to have been a nominal Buddhist in Hong Kong. Possessions and money were the main priorities in life. There were many Buddhist temples and my family saw it as money-making opportunities.   I was taught to respect and to be kind to the Buddhist monks because they do good work to mankind.  However, I also saw my parents, my extended families and many Hong Kong people went to worship in temples run by monks for money-making opportunities.  Many people believed that by worshipping gods (sometimes even devils) in temples, their money-making plans and wishes would be granted.

The search for wealth became more important than searching for the truth of life through religions.   I was taught to respect the elders in the family and to earn as much money as possible for the family.  In order to achieve this goal, I was guided to seek education abroad, especially my professional career

When I gave my life to Christ two weeks before my graduation as a dentist in Edinburgh, Scotland, my life was not the same again.  I asked myself these soul-searching questions:  what is my life for?  Am I just here to make as much money as possible to have happiness?  I left my burden at the foot of the cross and I asked Jesus to come into my life.  I felt I was as light as a feather guided by God.

His plan for me has been both surprising and unbelievable.  God gave me a wife, Hilary who then supported me through 4 year of medical training to become a doctor.  With dual qualifications, I furthered my studies and training to become a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.  Putting God and others first has freed me from the worldly distractions and temptations.

Now I feel that I am just a humble Chinaman living close to God and knowing I will get to heaven. John 3:16 ‘ For God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life’ and Romans 6:23 ‘… the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus’
